The Israelis have made themselves part of Syria's history by not signing peace with the Hafez al-Assad regime in 1967. So, not signing peace opened the path of allowing themselves to resort to preemptive attacks backed by the Menachem Begin doctrine, which says "Make sure that no enemy has a nuclear reactor." They bombed two buildings, The one in al-Kibar was indeed a building for nuclear purposes but the other one in al-Hasaka was a textile mill. Unfortunately, the Israeli propaganda machine has managed to prevent global opinion from differentiating the issue the Israelis have with Hezbollah, and the conflict they have with Iran because of the Menachem Begin doctrine. The issue and the conflict have been conflated even to justify their attacks on Hezbollah and Iran in Syria. However, when Bashar al-Assad fled the country on December 8, 2024, we saw the Israelis changing their strategy. |
